Personal Appearance – Fishing Seminar - Academy

The Inshore Fishing With Super Dave crew was at Academy Sports and Outdoors on Sept 27^th and we conducted three one hour fishing seminars.

San Antonio new Grand Opening of Academy Sports and Outdoors at Loop 410 and NW Military Highway was the location.

 Our fishing seminars are action packed and we cover tricks to use on the water to catch more fish.  We do product showcases and we educate the crowd regarding fishing strategically.  One of our most popular sections is our knot tying segment.  We will empower you on the water to catch more fish.

Laguna Madre - On Fire

Richard Gidrey and I choose to fish the Laguna just outside of Corpus Christi, Texas.   We were targeting some Redfish and Trout in the shallow waters around the Humble Channel and the Pita Island Area of the Laguna bay system.   Right out of the gate on both days, we were on fish. 

The size was in the lower slot but we were targeting some big fish.  We kept moving around.  That proved to be the real ticket.  We caught both Trout and Reds in numbers…………..AND in SIZE.

Our strategy was to pay close attention to the conditions and adjust our plans to meet the days particular circumstances.  We had Big Trout and………… Really BIG Reds after about 5 different locations.  Moving around is the key.

 Anglers Note:

These days in the Laguna were rock solid with regard to rod bending action.   The Hook Up’s did not really kick in until the wind and water began to move.  This is not a surprise, it should be considered in your plan.   Moving water will turn on the bite.

Today, we were fishing Croaker and Piggy Perch.  These baits require the correct equipment, and technique.  Barded line, 30 or 40 lb, is a must.  Also, the approach is critical.  Wait for the thump or solid strike.  After you feel this, give the fish some time and some line.  The Trout or Reds will take a few seconds to really take the bait.   After this delay, set the hook and be ready for the fight.

Arroyo City - Slow and Easy

Captain LeeRoy Gonzales and I fished the Arroyo City area today in search of Reds and Trout.  We had a great time on the water.

Arroyo City is located in the Rio Grande valley on the southern tip of Texas.  It is an unspoiled getaway for fishermen.  The area is situated on the Arroyo Colorado River.  The term “arroyo” means stream in Spanish.

Arroyo City was first settled by Mexican Cattle Herders in the early 1860’s.   By the 20^th Century, the area was basically abandoned.  As time progressed, by the 1950’s, the area was repopulated with fishermen like LeeRoy and I.    You can get to the Arroyo area by either the Harlington or Brownsville airports.

The pace here is slow and easy unless you are on the water.  If your on the water, the pace is escalated with some really hot fishing.

Anglers Note:

The area offers miles and miles of beautiful flats and barrier island complexes bisected with man made and natural cuts and channels.  We fished the channels for Speckled Trout and caught some great trout in numbers.  We fished the flats and potholes and caught some really nice Redfish.  Soft plastics were most effective for the Trout and the Reds were drawn in to bite on gold spoons. 

We predominately drift fished the area covering water to find our fish.  The soft plastics that worked best were a strait or split tail light green baits.  We worked it on and off the bottom to draw in the strike.  The spoons were used to cover water on the flats.  We used gold weed-less spoons and worked them just atop the sea-grass to attract the Reds.

Brownsville Snook

Captain Bradley Borreaux and I set out a second time, for the Illusive Snook in the Brownsville Ship Channel in Texas.  This is the Southern most section of the state of Texas.

We used crank bait hard plastics to catch fish in and around the structure along the ship docking stations, back cuts and pilings.  We were looking for some real Rod Bending Action today………….Big Snook.

 Things started great, Bradley had a nice Jack Carville.  Then we were on some Mangrove Snapper.  The Big Finish was in our sights.

We fished all around structure.  In fact, LeeRoy Gonzales from LG Outfitters was on board with us to help us position the boat tight in the structure.  He manned the trolling motor and kept us in the strike zone………Thanks LeeRoy.

 

Anglers Note:

Our goal was to catch a big Snook.  These fish are predominately a Florida fish but they have been known to occupy these waters in South Texas. 

We worked hard and kept moving.  Finally, I casted the crank bait close to the metal structure that was an old docking station and he tried to take the rod from me.  I ran down the side of the boat from the stern to the bow and LeeRoy cranked the MinnKota to full speed and we got away from the structure as quick as we could.  These big Snook are strong and they will head for cover which for us… means break-offs.  It was a truly awesome team effort to land this fish.  We released the fish to, fight another day.
