Sea Hunt Boats: Offshore Fishing on Fire

Fishing Date: March 28, 2015

Offshore fishing out of Port Aransas Texas is on fire! The Wide Open Outdoor Adventures crew headed out with Capt. Doug Stanford and my great friend Randy Trice in an awesome Sea Hunt Gamefish Offshore Boat. It was a center console boat with twin 300 Yamaha's. It was fairly rough---the seas were up to 5 feet but the boat handled it very well. We ran 45 miles offshore and fished the Baker platforms.

It took us 2 1/2 hours to get out there; we had to navigate some Serious water. The Sea Hunt handled the rough water like a champ and the twin Yamaha's home the way in unison.   
The water was very, very blue and very, very clear. We fished 285 feet around the Baker platforms.

We dropped our jigs to the bottom and begin working them up. If we didn't get a bite, we let them back down, felt the bottom and worked them back up. We generally found fish close to the bottom.

The bait of choice was the 9 inch vertical jigs with steel 5 foot leaders----silver, green and pink were the dynamite colors. We caught red snapper, king fish and AJs and Jack Crevalles. 

We had a big finish! I hooked into something big and 42 minutes later we could see color in the water. It was a silver color coming up from the abyss. I got a good workout.  Me 'n that fish played tug-of-war for a long time. I thought it was a shark, but it turned out to be a 55 inch 90 pound Amber Jack. This fish was the trophy of a lifetime. It was a tournament-winning fish, and we were so excited to have this big fish on board. It made for a great finale to an awesome show. Tony D, my main TV Camera man, captured it all on high definition video, and it'll air on KSAT Channel 12 later this year.

Angler's note: Fishing in Deepwater requires strength, stamina and technique. Make sure that your gear is up to this challenge. 65 pound at minimum braided line is required to fight big fish in Deepwater. I generally prefer a 90 pound but this amberjack was caught on 65 pound multicolor line which enabled me to determine when I'm making headway with the fish making headway. It was really cool--the multicolor line enables you to see segments across the line as it goes into the water to identify if you're able to retrieve more line onto your reel or if he's taking more line down into the deep blue.

Wounded Warriors in McMullen County

Hunt Date -- December 16, 2014

We made a very special TV Show for Wide Open Outdoor Adventures® in McMullen County with two Wounded Warriors. Tim Lindeman and his son TJ were there and so was Brandon Bunch. Tim and Brandon are both wounded warriors and veterans of the military system in the United States. They both served in Iraq to help defend our country. It was White Tail Deer Hunting Season and we extended the offer to have these guys out on the Teal Ranch. Our goal was to make a great TV show and get these boys on some awesome white tail deer hunting.   

My friend Tim Teal hosted the event on his ranch just outside of Tilden. We had them for two and a half days so we were very confident that the hunts would come together. We had fun and camaraderie around camp, which included eating meals prepared with Red Stag and Buffalo. Judy, Tim's wife, cooked some amazing desserts in the Dutch-Oven with mesquite coals, and we all had an amazing time.

Brandon ended up shooting a really awesome 8 point buck and TJ, Tim Lindeman's son, was able to get his first deer -- it was a 10 point. That's a heckuva first deer! The harvested animals were sent off for processing so the Warriors would enjoy some good white tail venison for weeks to come. The animals will also be memorialized we Shoulder Mounts since they were both awesome deer.   

Special thanks goes out to all who serve in the military to protect the freedom we enjoy in United States of America. Thousands and thousands of people have sacrificed over the years to make sure that the United States borders are secure. Thanks Tim and Brandon for taking some time to come out and hunt the Teal Ranch in McMullen County. It was awesome getting to know you both -- Look forward to seeing you again down the road !!
